Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: lawsuit against pig fattening facility in Suckwitz

Suckwitz/Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The environmental protection organization BUND has filed a complaint with the administrative court in Schwerin against the approval of the pig fattening facility in Suckwitz near Krakow am See. In the approval of the State Office for Agriculture and the Environment of Middle Mecklenburg from October 2020, the requirements for effective fire protection and the state's obligations to preserve European protected areas and protected habitats were not met, the BUND justified its lawsuit on Monday. Previous objections and an objection by BUND were dismissed.

Even after the fire in the Alt Tellin stables (Vorpommern-Greifswald district), the authorities see no need to change effective fire protection, said BUND Managing Director Corinna Cwielag. At the end of March 2021, a fire broke out in the Alt Tellin piglet breeding facility, killing around 50,000 animals. The cause of the fire has not yet been clarified.

The BUND further criticized the fact that the plant is to be built in the catchment area of sensitive and reportable bodies of water. "Current reports show the poor condition of the water and warn of an increase in the total number of livestock in the catchment area," emphasized Cwielag. The BUND also sees significant environmental impacts from the exhaust air from the plant. Nature, residents and tourists would then be heavily burdened later, despite the alleged compatibility.
