Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Liskow on refugee accommodation: calls for help from the municipalities

Schwerin/Grimmen (dpa/mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's CDU state and parliamentary group leader Franz-Robert Liskow has called for more support for the municipalities in the state and a stricter federal migration policy in view of growing problems with the accommodation of refugees. "I advise taking the calls for help from the local community seriously," warned Liskow on Thursday in Schwerin. The reason for this was media reports about plans by the city administration of Grimmen (West Pomerania-Rügen) to stop taking in refugees due to a lack of living space and a lack of places in day-care centers and schools. However, the distribution of refugees among the municipalities is the responsibility of the districts.

According to estimates by the Association of Towns and Municipalities, many municipalities have almost reached the level of 2015/2016 when it comes to taking in refugees. Lessons have been learned from the situation at that time and we are better prepared. "But in many places the housing market is simply exhausted. In addition, there are many children among the war refugees from Ukraine who need to be taught, which poses additional challenges for the municipalities," explained Andreas Wellmann, managing director of the association.

According to the Interior Ministry, around 3,000 new asylum seekers were registered in the north-east by the end of September, almost two-thirds more than at the same time last year. In addition, according to the information, there are currently more than 22,000 war refugees from Ukraine in the country.
