Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Port can maintain high handling level in the first half of the year

Rostock (dpa/mv) - In the first half of 2022, the overseas port in Rostock handled a similar number of goods as in the record result in the same half of the previous year. In the first six months, 14.4 million tons were loaded, the port operator Rostock Port announced on Friday in the Hanseatic city. The number of ferry passengers almost doubled to 953,000, reaching the level before the corona pandemic, according to the company. In the same half of the previous year, only 488,000 ferry passengers were transported.

The port operator also expects a significant recovery in the number of calls for cruise ships at the passenger quay in Warnemünde in 2022. 140 cruise ships are expected to anchor there this year, which would be a significant jump compared to the 47 calls in 2021 as a whole. In 2019, however, this number was still well above the forecast at 196 ships.

Managing Director Gernot Tesch was satisfied with the result. All Rostock port companies and authorities have ensured that - despite the war in Ukraine and the corona pandemic - the record level of the first half of 2021 in goods handling could be reached again. According to the information, almost two-thirds was accounted for by rolling freight in ferry and so-called RoRo traffic (9.1 million tons), the rest were bulk and general cargo (5.3 million tons).
