Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Process: Machete attack was preceded by years of dispute

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - The life-threatening machete attack in Bartow (Mecklenburg Lake District) was preceded by a year-long dispute between the accused and a number of villagers. This became clear on Tuesday in the trial for attempted manslaughter against the 70-year-old man at the Neubrandenburg district court. Several witnesses described the senior as a quarrelsome resident, whose dogs repeatedly roamed around freely despite warnings and are said to have frightened residents.

The public prosecutor accuses the 70-year-old of attacking and seriously injuring a 36-year-old neighbor with a machete on May 10. The defendant has already admitted the attack. But he defended himself against an attack.

The seriously injured victim said on Tuesday that he had only called the accused to order. This should not insult his girlfriend and mob the child. Then the senior called him back, insulted him and suddenly hit him with the hidden machete. The 36-year-old was seriously injured in his shoulder and arms, and it took about four months to heal.

The victim managed to take the gun from the attacker and escape to his property. The drunk accused was caught at the scene of the crime and taken into custody.

The defendant faces a sentence of several years in prison. The trial will resume on November 1st. Then, among other things, a psychiatric expert should be heard on the senior's criminal responsibility. According to previous plans, the chamber then also wants to hear the pleadings and pass a verdict.
