Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Rügen Bridge temporarily closed: Free travel on weekends

Stralsund (dpa / mv) - Car journeys to and from Rügen are only possible during the day until the end of June via the old Rügendamm. The main access via the large Rügen bridge has been closed on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. since Monday. According to the State Office for Road Construction and Traffic, the reason for this is the replacement of electrical displays for traffic control and maintenance measures. In order to be able to cope with the strong increase in travel to the popular Baltic Sea island at the beginning of the season, work is suspended on the weekends - on Saturdays and Sundays the Rügen Bridge can be used by motorists in addition to the Rügendamm.

According to the road construction authority, there are also closures on the federal highway 96 between the Rügen Bridge and the island city of Bergen due to maintenance work - first to Samtens and then between Samtens and Bergen. Traffic will be diverted via the L296. Like the bridge, however, the federal highway should be free in the evenings, at night and in the mornings, as well as on weekends.

The Rügen Bridge had already been blocked for the exchange of advertisements last year. There will probably be another blockage in the fall. The work should then be completed in 2023.

The traffic control system is used on the bridge, which has been expanded to three lanes, in order to change the direction of the third lane as required when traffic is high. According to the road authority, around 14,000 vehicles per day cross the bridge on average. In the summer season, the number is many times higher, especially on weekends.
