Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Storms with tornadoes cause major damage

Dömitz (dpa/mv) - A storm with tennis ball-sized hailstones caused major damage in Dömitz (Ludwigslust-Parchim). As Mayor Reinhold Suhrau (independent) said on Tuesday, roofs were damaged on Monday evening, around 100 trees were felled or damaged, and lamps and signs were destroyed. A tornado was pulled through the town in a very limited space, branches also fell on cars. Because of the damage, the streets in the city center were temporarily closed. There was a brief power outage. So far, Suhrau has estimated the damage at several hundred thousand euros.

A tree fell on a camping vehicle at the campsite, so that helpers had to get the occupants out first. Falling branches damaged several vehicles and tents, and hailstones also left dents on vehicles, a campground spokesman said.

Branches and trees damaged the roofs of the church, the tiled culture center and the commandant's house on the fortress, said Suhrau. "Any buildings that go up higher." This is a problem, particularly in the commander's house on the fortress site, since heavy equipment cannot be used there to remove damaged trees. According to the current overview, no one was injured. "The clean-up work will certainly continue all day," said the mayor.
