Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: The state plans to invest millions in daycare staff

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - From 2023, prospective educators for 0 to 10 year olds should no longer be counted towards the specialist equipment of their facility in the first two years of training. For the resulting additional posts to be filled, the state must provide around 5 million euros annually from 2024, said Minister of Education Simone Oldenburg (left) on Tuesday in Schwerin. However, the additional need for skilled workers is covered by a surplus of qualified educators.

In addition, the state government wants to give the municipalities the opportunity to apply to the state for funding for everyday helpers who help in the day-care centers. In 2023, this offer will no longer be financed from the MV protection fund - as before - but completely from the regular state budget. "In this way, the specialists can better concentrate on their pedagogical work again," commented the minister. An amendment to the Day-Care Center Funding Act will then regulate how the costs will be distributed between the state and municipalities in the future.

According to Oldenburg, 1,300 specialists in the area of day care for children had recently completed their training, and the annual requirement for new hires is up to 400. This also includes trainees in the areas of social assistance and remedial care. According to the information, around 1,800 young people have started their training again. The Minister of Education explained the large number of new trainees primarily with the usual fluctuations in the attractiveness of the profession for young people. Nevertheless, she sees paid training as an educator for 0 to 10-year-olds as an attractive offer that represents a gain for the state.
