Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Young State Theater in Parchim clears the old venue

For many years, performances at the Junges Staatstheater Parchim were significantly hampered by spatial restrictions. That will change with the move to the "Kulturmühle".

Parchim/Schwerin (dpa/mv) - After eight decades, the Parchim theater ensemble is leaving its old venue in the city center and moving to the renovated Eldemühle, which will be the new home from May as "Kulturmühle". The Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin, to which the Junges Staatstheater Parchim belongs, announced on Wednesday that there are still two performances of the play "Das Secret" on the program in the painting room of the old theater on February 28 and March 1. Like the premiere last weekend, these two performances are also sold out.

"The last applause at the premiere in the Malsaal has faded away, now we're packing. On May 20th, our first premiere will be experienced in the newly opened "Kulturmühle": "Tiere im Theater"," said director Thomas Ott-Albrecht. Until the move to the "Kulturmühle", the Young State Theater will continue to give guest performances. Youth plays, which can also be performed in schools, are regularly part of the repertoire, including productions such as "Die pale Sophie", "Das Lied der Nibelungen" or "Faust - Ein Solo". According to Ott-Albrecht, the Young State Theater had a total of around 30,000 visitors a year before the corona pandemic.

The building in Parchimer Blutstrasse, a former hotel, had been used as a theater since 1945. Structural defects and inadequate fire protection meant that the large hall there was closed to visitors in 2014. In the house itself, performances could only take place in the theater restaurant and in the converted painting hall.

A refurbishment of the old theater was rejected in favor of a fundamental conversion of the listed grain mill on the Elde, which had been vacant since 2008. In addition to the theatre, the "Kulturmühle" also accommodates the city museum and the city information center. According to the district, the construction costs total around 40 million euros. According to the State Chancellery, the state is contributing 15.5 million euros.
