"No matter how good they are …": Sido advises sons against rap music

Paul Würdig aka Sido is one of Germany's most successful rap musicians, but he would advise his own sons against such a career. The reason for this, however, is not that they lack the necessary talent. His concern is different.

Sido would advise his sons not to make rap music. "No matter what they do, no matter how good they are, they can even be better than me, they would always be compared to me," explains the rapper. "You would always blame them for having all the success because of me."

The two eldest sons of the musician, whose real name is Paul Würdig, are already making music. "The eldest makes such instrumental stuff, he's already releasing it," says Sido. "But he's doing an apprenticeship quite normally." So he only makes music on the side. "And when I play live, he's the drummer in my band," says Sido.

The rapper would give himself the advice today: "Don't take drugs, don't even start with them." He doesn't want to give his younger self experiences like "good sex". "But I don't think it's necessary for that," says Sido. "That's why I would say to my younger self: 'Stop with the drugs.'" And Sido knows what he's talking about.

As the 41-year-old made public in an interview with "Spiegel" in November, he slipped into a crisis at the beginning of the corona pandemic. At that time he started using pills, liquid ecstasy, speed and cocaine again. "Everything got out of hand. In the end I was in a rat." Only withdrawal in a clinic and subsequent therapy would have brought him back on track.

"Without the withdrawal and the physical checks in the clinic, I probably wouldn't have survived this summer," Sido continued. Today he is clean, but does not want to give up smoking weed because "this was never my problem". "After a week I was done with rehab, but I realized that this is just the beginning."
