North Rhine-Westphalia: Alleged double murder on the Rhine: Life imprisonment required

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - In the trial for an alleged double murder of a 24-year-old woman and her four-year-old son, the Cologne public prosecutor's office has pleaded for a life sentence. It has been proven that the 25-year-old accused killed his former lover and their son and then threw them into the Rhine, a public prosecutor said on Monday before the Cologne Regional Court. The public prosecutor's office assumes greed as a motive. The accused did not want to pay child support. In addition, he wanted to prevent it from being known at all that he was the father.

The bodies of the woman and child were discovered in November 2021 in the Rhine near Cologne. According to the indictment, the 25-year-old is said to have killed the woman and their son with multiple stab wounds.

At the beginning of August, the German confessed to the crime in the process. He had stated that he only found out in September 2021 that he was the father of the four-year-old. At the beginning of 2017, the accused and the 24-year-old were said to have had a brief affair, and the boy was born in October.

In the last word, the 25-year-old apologized to the father and grandfather of the victims for his "cruel deed". His defense attorneys had not previously filed a specific criminal complaint, but had cast doubt on the bundle of motives put forward by the public prosecutor. A verdict in the case is expected to be announced on September 6th.
