North Rhine-Westphalia: Association of municipalities demands 40,000 places for refugees from the state

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The Association of Towns and Municipalities of North Rhine-Westphalia is calling on the state to significantly expand the number of accommodation places for refugees from Ukraine. North Rhine-Westphalia must create at least 40,000 additional places, the association demanded on Wednesday in Düsseldorf. To do this, the federal and state governments would have to reactivate and use their own buildings. In addition, the municipalities would have to be provided with the necessary financial resources beyond 2022. The presidium representing 361 towns and communities in North Rhine-Westphalia passed a corresponding resolution.

The president of the municipal umbrella organization Eckhard Ruthemeyer (CDU) said that the municipalities were at the limit when it came to taking in refugees. "More and more don't know how to accommodate people," said the mayor of Soest.

The presidium of the municipal umbrella organization stated that in many cities and municipalities the load limit for accommodation and care for refugees from Ukraine and asylum seekers had now been reached. The "Rheinische Post" reported.
