North Rhine-Westphalia: Associations criticize the supplementary budget

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The supplementary budget of around 900 million euros for the black-green state government of North Rhine-Westphalia for 2022 has been met with criticism from associations. At an expert hearing in the state parliament on Thursday, there was skepticism about the 1,000 additional teaching posts for children and young people who had fled Ukraine. These new positions are "logical and necessary," said Stefan Behlau, chairman of the VBE NRW educational association. "But only teachers and not apprenticeships can teach, educate and educate." It will be an important challenge to actually be able to fill the positions. In case of doubt, the money set aside for this purpose should not flow back to the Ministry of Finance, but should be made available to the schools.

With the supplementary budget for 2022, black-green in NRW wants to redeem the first promises made in the coalition agreement. The draft provides for the entry into an equal starting salary for teachers as well as more money for climate protection, security, flood protection and the Ukraine refugees. The state government wants to provide more than 570 million euros in the current year for refugees from Ukraine alone.

Thanks to higher tax revenues, the financial flexibility of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has increased. The state budget for 2022 is to grow by almost 900 million to a good 88.4 billion euros with the supplement.
