North Rhine-Westphalia: Cologne shows solidarity with the Iran protest

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The legendary "Arsch huh" concert 30 years ago was commemorated with a concert in the Lanxess Arena. At the concert on November 9, 1992 on Chlodwigplatz in the south of Cologne, under the impression of racist pogroms such as in Rostock, protests were made against intolerance and right-wing ideas. At the anniversary event on Thursday evening, the focus was on the situation in Iran. Pop singer Sogand wanted to sing the anthem of the Iranian protest movement under the motto "Cologne shows solidarity with the uprising in Iran".

A video of the performance should send a strong sign of solidarity to Iran, the organizers said. "Cologne stands with the peaceful demonstrators in Iran and especially the Iranian women who started the uprising with their protests after the assassination of Jina Mahsa Amini."

About 100,000 people are said to have gathered at the "Arsch huh" concert in 1992. Speakers at the time included popular actor Willy Millowitsch (1909-1999), WDR journalist Klaus Bednarz (1942-2015) and resistance fighter Jean Jülich (1929-2011).

The trigger for the current protests in Iran was the death of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini in mid-September. The vice squad arrested her for allegedly violating Islamic dress codes. The woman died in police custody on September 16. Since her death, tens of thousands have been demonstrating across the country against the government's repressive course and the Islamic system of rule.
