North Rhine-Westphalia: Cyber alarm in the state parliament: investigations into computer sabotage

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - After a mysterious IT incident in the Düsseldorf state parliament, the responsible central and contact point for cybercrime (ZAC) of the Cologne public prosecutor's office is now investigating computer sabotage. The affected Green MP Martin Metz will be listed as a witness or injured party, said a ZAC spokesman. It is still unknown who could be behind the sabotage.

According to the ZAC, the MP's laptop that was seized is being examined to see whether there is or has been so-called malware on the computer. Without the knowledge of the user, this could have addressed an IP address that is on a warning list from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). According to the public prosecutor, it is quite possible that the computer was accessed from outside. It is still unclear whether data was tapped. The backgrounds too.

At the end of September, the state parliament initially identified a "critical connection attempt" to the IP address in question. The protective device ("firewall") of the state parliament had blocked the connection. When the incident was investigated, another case emerged, which led to Green MP Metz's computer.
