North Rhine-Westphalia: Duisburg Christmas market opened in energy-saving mode

Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - Duisburg was one of the first major cities in Germany to open the Christmas market on Thursday morning. The market opens unusually early and will last 47 days longer than usual, said the spokesman for the organizer Duisburg Kontor, Alexander Klomparend. Saving energy is a big topic at the booth magic with bratwurst and mulled wine: For years, only energy-saving LED lighting has been used, which this year will only be switched on at dusk, said the spokesman. In addition, the ice rink was not used because of the high energy consumption.

There was a clear blue sky and sunshine at the opening. Nevertheless, the organizers rely on the Christmas spirit. With a total of 120 stands, booths and carousels, the Duisburg Christmas market is one of the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Landmarks such as the traditional mulled wine ship, a pyramid and the large Ferris wheel will be there again this year. The Christmas market in Duisburg is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and up to two million visitors are expected.
