North Rhine-Westphalia: Düsseldorf carnivalists tear off motto cars

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - With a hammer in his hand, carriage builder Jacques Tilly punches the face of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, "toad minister" Robert Habeck sinks into mountains of rubbish: the Düsseldorf carnivalists stuck to their tradition on Tuesday and the motto carriages from Shrove Monday in one Paper Mache Massacre Destroyed. "It's always a holiday," said Tilly (59).

Unlike in previous years, however, only a minority of the floats fell victim to the destructiveness of their builders: Most of the political motto floats from the Düsseldorf wagon builder will be preserved this year beyond the carnival.

Only four of the twelve cars were destroyed during the traditional scrapping on Tuesday. "It's a whole new development that the cars still work after Shrove Monday," said Tilly.

There are already interested parties for a number of cars. "The Putin bathtub will certainly still be used at demonstrations, and there have already been talks about that," said the car builder. The Brexit car is to be exported to England.

"Of course we need the cars primarily for the fools in Düsseldorf and the fools on the side of the road. But if they also have great feedback globally - you couldn't wish for anything nicer," said Tilly.
