North Rhine-Westphalia: Electrolysis system for truck refueling funded with millions

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is funding the construction of an electrolysis plant for green hydrogen in Düren with up to two million euros. The hydrogen obtained from the "Wind2Move" project is to be used to refuel around 30 fuel cell trucks from regional companies, as Economics Minister Mona Neubaur (Greens) announced on Tuesday.

"Our goal is to put significantly more goods vehicles with green engines on the road by 2030. For this we need an efficient infrastructure with charging stations and hydrogen filling stations for goods transport in the country," said Neubaur.

With the planned electrolyser, which is supplied by local wind power and free-field photovoltaic systems, around 140 tons of hydrogen are to be produced annually. The ministry reported that refueling the climate-friendly trucks would save around 500,000 liters of diesel and 1,300 tons of CO2.

According to the ministry, freight transport currently accounts for one third of the total emissions in the transport sector. Around a quarter of the German logistics centers are based in North Rhine-Westphalia.
