North Rhine-Westphalia: Even without lights, the cathedral keeps a close eye on the people of Cologne

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The fact that the Cologne Cathedral should now remain dark at night to save energy meets with support from the local cathedral chapter. Cathedral master builder Peter Füssenich has already been "open to the idea of switching off the night lighting of Cologne Cathedral" in the past few weeks, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

The master builder is convinced: "Even if the lights go out in the cathedral at night, he takes good care of the people of Cologne." The cathedral chapter supports the decision of the city administration.

The city of Cologne announced on Monday that the lighting in representative buildings would be switched off at 11 p.m. in the future. The reason: In times of war in Ukraine, energy should be saved. The world-famous cathedral in downtown Cologne is also affected. On the night of Tuesday it was seen unlit.

Among other things, the cathedral chapter is responsible for organizing cathedral services and maintaining the cathedral.
