North Rhine-Westphalia: Fire in a vacant building causes large-scale use

Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - A fire in an empty building below the Autobahn 59 in Duisburg has caused a major fire brigade deployment. A smoke development from the former shooting range was reported late Monday evening, said a spokesman for the Duisburg fire brigade on Monday morning. No one was found inside or around the building, officials said. There were no injuries. Firefighters fought the fire using heavy respiratory protection, but had to leave the building again due to the risk of collapse and continue the extinguishing work from the outside.

The fire was brought under control - but the post-extinguishing work continued on Monday morning. In the meantime, an entrance and an exit to the motorway were closed. During the extinguishing work, tram traffic was impaired. There were 50 firefighters on duty, it said.
