North Rhine-Westphalia: Ford ended Fiesta production a year earlier than planned

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The car manufacturer Ford will stop production of the small car Fiesta in Cologne a year earlier than previously planned. Production will end in June next year, said Ford-Werke GmbH on Wednesday. The small car was originally supposed to roll off the assembly line in Cologne by 2024. However, the company emphasizes that the step will not involve job cuts. The Fiesta makes room for the new electric vehicle, which will be produced in Cologne from the end of 2023.

Ford already started a training offensive for employees in the summer after the factory holidays. More than 3,200 employees would be successively prepared for the production of the new electric vehicles and how to use the high-voltage technology.

A total of over 22 million Fiestas have been produced worldwide since 1976. However, the sales figures have recently declined significantly. Ford only announced a billion-euro investment package in the spring, with which the Cologne plant is to be prepared for the production of electric cars.
