Düsseldorf/Cologne (dpa/lnw) - Numerous flights are canceled at the airports in North Rhine-Westphalia due to the pilots' strike at Eurowings on Monday. At Düsseldorf Airport alone, the Lufthansa subsidiary's largest location, around a hundred connections were canceled, as a look at the cancellations on the airport's website on Sunday showed. According to the airport, 171 take-offs and landings were originally planned. According to the airport, Eurowings canceled 43 of the originally planned 76 flights at Cologne/Bonn Airport.

The Vereinigung Cockpit union has called on the Eurowings pilots to go on a three-day strike from Monday to Wednesday. It is the second pilot strike at Eurowings in less than 14 days.

Eurowings expects more than 230 of the approximately 400 planned flights to take place on Monday, as the company announced on Sunday. The company also expects to be able to carry out more than half of the planned flight program for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The pilots' association wants to use the industrial action to achieve better working conditions. A central requirement is the relief of employees, for example by reducing the maximum flight duty times and increasing rest times. Eurowings criticized the strike as disproportionate and irresponsible.
