North Rhine-Westphalia: Man with a gun triggers a SEK mission in Cologne

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - An apparently armed 31-year-old man triggered the deployment of a special task force (SEK) in Cologne on Thursday afternoon. As the authority announced, the fire brigade was initially alerted because a smoke detector had sounded the alarm. When firefighters arrived, they found the man at his home, gun in hand.

The fire brigade then withdrew and called the police for help. The police cordoned off the area around the house with a large contingent. After that, SEK forces gained access to the apartment and overpowered the 31-year-old. After an initial assessment, he was mentally disturbed, the police reported. He will be medically examined. The search for the weapon seen by firefighters was still ongoing Thursday evening.
