North Rhine-Westphalia: Murder commission determined after attack on couple

Rheda-Wiedenbrück (dpa/lnw) - A police homicide commission is investigating the case of a couple who are said to have been attacked by a group of three in Rheda-Wiedenbrück (Gütersloh district) and who are said to have become the victims of an attempted homicide. The 35-year-old and the 37-year-old suffered serious injuries from "blunt force", as the police and prosecutors announced on Tuesday. In the meantime, the man was even assumed to be life-threatening. A 29-year-old suspect is in custody. The other two alleged perpetrators, aged 16 and 42, were initially taken into police custody.

According to police, the background to the incident on Sunday was a dispute between the three men and the couple about "financial interests". A police spokesman did not say what was specifically disputed, referring to the ongoing investigation. It was also initially unclear what kind of "blunt force" the three Germans are said to have used.

The investigators arrested the 29-year-old at the scene of the crime and initially identified him as the sole suspect. He is accused of attempted manslaughter. Later, the other two men also came into focus. They are suspected of being involved in the violence. The exact contribution they are supposed to have made is still being determined.
