North Rhine-Westphalia: Police: Man killed ex-partner and killed himself

Neukirchen-Vluyn (dpa/lnw) - After two dead people were found in a house in Neukirchen-Vluyn (Wesel district) on Wednesday, investigators reconstructed the course of events. Accordingly, a 55-year-old man killed his 48-year-old ex-partner in the house on Wednesday afternoon with considerable violence. He then took his own life on the top floor of the apartment building, the police and prosecutors said in a joint statement on Thursday. A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office confirmed that he hanged himself.

Both dead were autopsied on Thursday. "The knowledge about what happened coincides with the results of the autopsies," the statement said. The public prosecutor did not want to provide any further information on the background to the crimes for reasons of protecting relatives. The procedure will be discontinued because the alleged perpetrator is dead.

Police were called to the home by witnesses on Wednesday afternoon. Rescue workers first found the woman's body. Because the suspect's whereabouts were still unclear, special forces were called in for a short time. Later on Wednesday, a homicide commission began securing evidence and questioning relatives.
