North Rhine-Westphalia: Police pays RWE for operations in the opencast mine

Aachen (dpa / lnw) - Since 2019, the police in Aachen have paid more than 143,000 euros for assistance from RWE in connection with protests to the energy company. A spokesman for the Aachen police said on Tuesday, for example, that it was about providing all-terrain vehicles to get demonstrators out of the opencast mine. In another case, costs arose through the use of an RWE property. The news portal "t-online.de" reported on information from the police on the online platform "Ask the State".

RWE usually charged services because the company acted as an "administrative assistant" to the Aachen police. It is about the provision of equipment and services, according to the police. Among other things, the police had used the railway after occupying a coal railway in the opencast mine to bring participants in the protest action out of the impassable terrain.

According to the police, RWE has not yet provided any cost estimates for the evacuation of the village of Lützerath at the Garzweiler opencast lignite mine at the beginning of January. At the top, the police were on site with 3,700 officers in one day.
