North Rhine-Westphalia: Prominent opponents for Bochum's club boss Villis

Bochum (dpa / lnw) - At VfL Bochum there are prominent challengers for the incumbent executive committee around club boss Hans-Peter Villis for the new elections at the annual general meeting on Tuesday. The team doctor of the Bundesliga soccer club, Karl-Heinz Bauer, wants to replace Villis with a group of candidates and take over responsibility in the club. The group of five challengers also includes former VfL professionals Ralf Zumdick and Marcel Maltritz. The association's selection committee has now approved the group of candidates for election, the association announced on Friday.

Goalkeeper Zumdick was in 309 games between the posts of Bochum, was then assistant coach for many years and from 2000 to 2001 for 43 games VfL head coach. Defender Maltritz played 328 games for Bochum. Team doctor Bauer himself has been looking after the VfL players for 23 years. There are also two business people from the region.

"We want to bring VfL forward by developing and implementing new strategies in an appreciative culture of cooperation in order to position our club in the best possible way," said Bauer about his application. The current Executive Committee and the group of candidates stand for election en bloc, there are no individual applicants.

The incumbent executive committee around energy manager Villis, who has been on the committee since 2010 and has chaired it since 2012, is made up of people from business and sport and is standing for re-election almost as a whole. Only Villis' deputy, the former Bundesliga professional Martin Kree (1997 Champions League victory with Borussia Dortmund) has announced his retirement.
