Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - Train travelers in the western Ruhr area will be faced with massive restrictions on S-Bahn, regional trains and long-distance transport in the coming months. This Friday it starts later in the evening - first on the route between Duisburg and Oberhausen. According to Deutsche Bahn, restrictions on the busy route from Duisburg via Mülheim to Essen are to be expected from the end of March. All trains around the Duisburg hub should only run regularly again at the beginning of July.
The background is construction work. Deutsche Bahn announced that it was about modernizing the rails, but also about a major motorway project. The Kaiserberg motorway junction in Duisburg is to be modernized and expanded within eight years. Eight railway tracks also run in the area of this major construction site. In addition, two railway bridges in Oberhausen and several kilometers of track will be renewed.
This Friday, travelers between Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Oberhausen will be affected from 9 p.m. On the RE5 (Koblenz-Wesel) and RE19 (Düsseldorf-Arnhem) lines, trains will be diverted and will not stop at Düsseldorf Airport, Duisburg and Oberhausen Hauptbahnhof. Between Düsseldorf Airport and Duisburg, passengers can change to other trains, between Duisburg and Oberhausen only buses run.
The RE3 (Düsseldorf-Hamm) will also be diverted and will not stop in Oberhausen and Essen-Altenessen. On the RE44 (Moers-Bottrop), RB35 (Mönchengladbach-Gelsenkirchen) and RB32 (Duisburg-Dortmund) lines, the trains end early in Duisburg and Oberhausen. Travelers must transfer to other trains or replacement buses. The construction site timetable is initially valid until March 31st. In the coming weeks, Deutsche Bahn wants to provide information about the next construction measures, which will also lead to failures on the highly frequented Duisburg-Essen route.
