North Rhine-Westphalia: Reul: More police officers for all authorities for the first time

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - According to the Düsseldorf Ministry of the Interior, all 47 district police authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia will have more police officers for the first time on September 1st. The ministry announced on Monday in Düsseldorf that there are likely to be 250 additional posts available especially for law enforcement officers.

Overall, the number of employees in the district police authorities will increase by around 700. This includes government employees who relieve police officers of administrative tasks. In this area alone, according to the ministry, an additional 2,500 jobs were created in the past legislative period.

The state government has already "ensured that there are more recruitments than retirements," emphasized Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU). "We managed to turn the tide last year and the police family has grown again for the first time after a long dry spell."

After the three-year training period, the significant increase in the number of hires is now reflected in every district authority with additional police officers. The final distribution will be on September 1st, after the final exams of the candidate commissioners.

The new black-green state government had announced that it would further increase the number of commissioner candidates from the current 2,600 to 3,000 per year.
