Essen (dpa / lnw) - The energy company RWE wants to build battery storage systems with a total capacity of 220 megawatts at two existing power plant locations in North Rhine-Westphalia. The group put the investment volume at the Neurath and Hamm sites at 140 million euros on Monday. The storage facilities are scheduled to go into operation in 2024.

Battery storage is considered an important part of the energy transition, because they store energy when there is an overproduction of electricity in the grid and make it available again when it is needed.

A total of 690 blocks with lithium-ion batteries are to be installed at the North Rhine-Westphalian RWE power plant sites in Neurath and Hamm: 80 megawatts in Neurath and 140 megawatts in Hamm. The group emphasized that the existing grid infrastructure can be used to feed in and feed out the storage energy.

"Our new battery storage will optimize the use of our German power plant park and provide control energy together with it," said RWE manager Roger Miesen. The planned system reacts in seconds and can provide the designed performance for over an hour. As a result, the system contributes to the efficient stabilization of the grid and a reliable power supply.

According to its own statements, RWE is currently running battery storage projects with an installed capacity of around 150 megawatts. The group's goal is to build three gigawatts of battery storage by 2030.
