North Rhine-Westphalia: thief steals pick-up: owner flees on the loading area

Schermbeck (dpa / lnw) - In Schermbeck (Wesel district), a 40-year-old man swung onto his stolen pick-up during a cinematic action and took part in the escape trip on the loading area. It ended in a tree - and with an arrest. The police announced on Friday.

The 40-year-old left the car key in the car on Friday while he wanted to hang up a trailer. In the meantime, the thief swung himself into the driver's seat and drove off - according to the police, the owner still managed to grab the handle of the loading area and pulled himself up while driving. The thief was not particularly impressed and on the contrary - according to the estimate of the 40-year-old - accelerated to about 70 kilometers per hour.

Eventually, the thief rammed into another car, took the car off the road, hit a lamppost, and then hit a tree head-on. Police say he wanted to run away. But passers-by stopped him. The 39-year-old was arrested. The vehicle owner flew off the loading area in the accident. He and the 32-year-old woman at the wheel of the rammed car were slightly injured. The pick-up was totaled.
