Saxony-Anhalt: Completion of the "Gimritzer Damm" flood protection system

Halle (dpa/sa) - The construction work on the flood protection system on Gimritzer Damm in Halle has been completed. A 1,240 meter long concrete protective wall should protect the Halle-Neustadt district against flooding in the future, said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Environment on Friday. A total of around 4.9 million euros was invested in upgrading the dam.

"Record water levels were reached in Halle during the 2013 flood, parts of the old town were under water and Halle-Neustadt was also threatened with flooding," said State Secretary Steffen Eichner. At that time, the Gimritzer Damm could be maintained and a catastrophe prevented. "Thanks to the comprehensive renovation that has now been completed, Halle-Neustadt is better equipped than ever to deal with flooding."

Originally the "Gimritzer Damm" was a pure earth dam. Among other things, a concrete flood protection wall two meters high and 50 centimeters wide has now been erected. According to the ministry, an asphalted path was laid out on the land side.
