Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Just over two months until Christmas - but preparations have already begun for suppliers of Christmas trees in Saxony-Anhalt. However, customers have to be prepared for higher costs at the sales stands this year. "The price is expected to increase minimally," said Hardi Busche from the Harzer Tanne near Ballenstedt (Harz district).
The family business has around 100,000 fir trees, most of which are northern firs. In recent months, the Christmas tree grower has primarily struggled with rising energy costs, which have had an impact on tree prices. The costs for fertilizer, petrol and the networks have risen sharply.
Alexander Blank, an employee at the Saxony-Anhalt state forestry company, also believes that it is possible to increase the price: "Tree care has become more expensive, especially for private providers." The condition of the older firs is also a cause for concern, as the weather and lack of precipitation are causing them problems.
Above all, Busche worries about the young trees - the drought is particularly difficult for them. "Around half of the planted young firs have failed," said Busche. The older northern firs, on the other hand, are more drought-resistant. The effects of the drought will only be felt in the next few years.
Therefore, Busche experiments with exotic fir trees to "find the right Christmas tree for the future". In addition to the classic northern firs, Korean firs and Taiwanese firs are also planted. But Busche is certain that northern fir will continue to make up the majority for a while.
According to him, the supply of Christmas trees will be sufficient in winter. The lack of staff at the sales stands, which has caused problems in recent years, also seems to have been resolved. At least there are already many inquiries from people who want to earn something around Christmas time, said Busche.
