Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Intel boss Pat Gelsinger visited Magdeburg, where the US chip manufacturer is planning a production site. Gelsinger looked at the planned location in the Eulenberg industrial park on Saturday, the State Chancellery announced. Afterwards there was a discussion with Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff, Economics Minister Sven Schulze and Magdeburg Mayor Simone Borris. Gelsinger said he is excited about the plans for the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Germany. He also paid a visit to the Magdeburg Cathedral.
Haseloff announced that an "Intel Project" working group would be set up in the Federal Chancellery, in which he and Schulze would be involved. "The Intel settlement is not only a great benefit for the region and the entire country, it is also on the right track." The state and the municipalities involved will continue to play their part in the future so that the project can be implemented quickly.
On the visit of the Intel boss, the prime minister said: "I am pleased that Pat Gelsinger has now been able to personally convince himself of the excellent location conditions in Magdeburg."
Chips are to be produced in Magdeburg from 2027. In a first expansion stage, two semiconductor plants are to be built. Several thousand jobs could be created. Intel intends to invest around 17 billion euros for this initially. The groundbreaking could take place in the first half of 2023. The federal government has announced that it intends to support the manufacturer's settlement with billions.
