Saxony-Anhalt: Kellner pushes for earlier exit from coal in East Germany

Zerbst (dpa/sa) - The Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics, Michael Kellner (Greens), has again called for a faster phase-out of coal than in 2038. One argues and fights for an exit in 2030, he said on Saturday at a state party conference of the Saxony-Anhalt Greens in Zerbst (Anhalt-Bitterfeld district). "What NRW can do, East Germany can do too."

At the beginning of October, the green-led economics ministries in the federal government and North Rhine-Westphalia had agreed with the energy company RWE to phase out coal in the Rhenish Revier by 2030. SPD, Greens and FDP in the federal government have stated in their coalition agreement that the coal phase-out should “ideally” be brought forward to 2030. Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) recently insisted on the previous target date of 2038.

Kellner said on Saturday that the eastern German states would have locational advantages with the availability of green energy. According to Kellner, one reason for the settlement of the US chip manufacturer Intel in Magdeburg was the high proportion of renewable energies in Saxony-Anhalt.

Chips are to be produced in Magdeburg from 2027. In a first expansion stage, two semiconductor factories are to be built, which could create several thousand jobs. Intel initially wants to invest around 17 billion euros in this. The groundbreaking could take place in the first half of 2023.
