Saxony-Anhalt: Less evaded taxes discovered again

Most Saxony-Anhalt pay their taxes honestly. However, tax investigators keep tracking down black sheep and ensure that millions end up in the state coffers.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, the total volume of uncovered evaded taxes fell again last year. Tax evasion amounting to 16,604,920 euros was found, the Ministry of Finance in Magdeburg said when asked. In 2020, the sum was still 25.2 million euros and thus already well below that of 2019, when it was still a good 73.5 million euros. In 2018, unpaid taxes of around 75.2 million euros were uncovered.

"The amount of the additional taxes determined is also influenced by the conclusion of so-called large-scale proceedings," said the ministry. "The determination period in these cases is usually several years. In the year in which one or more large-scale proceedings are concluded, the additional result of evaded taxes increases above average."

According to the Ministry of Finance, 229 searches were completed last year, compared to 322 in 2020 and around 300 in 2019.

However, suspected tax evaders also report to the authorities independently: According to the information, a total of 44 voluntary disclosures were made in 2021. How high the sum of the resulting evaded taxes is not collected, as it was said.

There are currently 76 tax investigators in the state. None of them have retired in the past year. Two new employees who are currently in training were added, according to the ministry.
