Saxony-Anhalt: Minister: The federal government must support companies and citizens more

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Energy Minister Armin Willingmann sees the federal government as more responsible for implementing the climate goals in view of the challenges posed by the Ukraine war. "If we want to generate around 80 percent of electricity from renewable energies by 2030, the federal government not only has to expand the legal framework to give priority to renewables, but also to give citizens and companies even more support," said the SPD politician to the German Press Agency on Monday.

In addition to a further relief package and measures to support companies, the federal government must launch further funding programs for climate-neutral energy and heating systems and for energy-efficient building renovation. According to MDR Sachsen-Anhalt, Willingmann previously announced that he wanted to negotiate with the federal government about further funding measures for the energy transition.

A good two weeks ago, a comprehensive package of laws was launched in the federal government. The federal government's goal is to increase the share of electricity generated from renewable energies in electricity consumption to at least 80 percent by 2030. Willingmann pointed out to the MDR that the political project had been planned before the Ukraine war played a role.

According to Willingmann, climate change should not be overlooked during the war in Ukraine. However, in order to achieve the goals set in view of the necessary temporary reactivation of hard coal and lignite power plants, additional efforts are required, the minister told the dpa. "Politics through subsidies and each individual through austerity measures."
