Halle (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, the debt of the municipalities has increased. The country's large cities are particularly affected, according to information from the State Statistical Office on Thursday. The debt of the so-called municipal core budgets was around 2.78 billion euros at the end of the first quarter of 2022. That was 74 million euros or 2.7 percent more than at the same time last year.

At the end of the first quarter of 2022, the independent cities recorded a debt level of 867 million euros. That was 109 million euros or 14.4 percent more than on March 31, 2021. An increase of 22.7 percent was registered in loans for investments. Accordingly, the independent cities spent around 72 million euros more on this compared to the first quarter of 2021.

Loans to secure liquidity increased by EUR 37 million or 8.4 percent in the same period. According to the statistics, the debts of the counties fell compared to the first quarter of 2021, as did that of the smaller towns and municipalities in the state.
