Thale (dpa/sa) - The oil film discovered on the water surface of the Rappbode dam in the Harz Mountains does not pose a threat to the drinking water supply. The Saxony-Anhalt dam operation and the Fernwasser Elbaue-Ostharz (FEO) company announced on Thursday that action teams had managed to limit the oily film near the shore. According to the information, FEO receives raw water from the dam for the drinking water treatment of around one million people in central Germany. The oily substance is currently being investigated, it said. Its origin was initially unknown, the oil film was noticed on Wednesday afternoon during inspection work.

According to their own statements, the police initiated an investigation into suspected water pollution, and a helicopter was also used to document the pollution from the air. There is currently no evidence of an intentional act. The investigation is ongoing, it said.
