Saxony-Anhalt: Presentation of the six-ton bell in the Magdeburg Cathedral

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The new bell "Amemus" was presented and exhibited in Magdeburg Cathedral on Sunday during a ceremony. The association Domglocken Magdeburg announced that the six-ton sound body will soon complete the north tower bell as the fourth bell. The bell was cast on September 2nd in Neuenkirchen in Baden-Württemberg. According to the association, it was the first bell casting for the cathedral after 320 years. This is the "next milestone" on the way to ringing twelve bells, it said.

Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU), Magdeburg's Mayor Simone Borris (independent) and the Bishop of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, Friedrich Kramer, also attended the ceremony.

"Amemus" ("let us love") can only be placed in the tower once the necessary conversion work has been completed. In addition, the appropriate clapper would have to be forged.

The next six smaller bells are to be cast at Easter 2023. They too should first be seen in the cathedral, because first of all, for example, a second belfry level would have to be installed and the existing belfry would have to be upgraded. A new ringing order and the appropriate ringing technology are also steps that are necessary before the bells can be moved into the tower of the cathedral. The ringing order determines which bells ring on which occasion in which constellation.
