Saxony-Anhalt: State collects more taxes and pays off debts

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The state of Saxony-Anhalt took in more taxes last year than originally expected. The tax revenue was 1.06 billion euros and thus 11.6 percent higher than estimated, confirmed the Ministry of Finance of Michael Richter (CDU) on request. The "Mitteldeutsche Zeitung" reported about it first. The additional revenue was also related to inflation.

However, the state government does not have any greater financial leeway due to the additional income. The debt brake stipulates that Saxony-Anhalt must repay loans that it has taken out. The mechanism is intended to prevent debt being taken on in bad years and additional expenditure requests being financed in times of bubbling tax revenues, thus putting a repayment on the back burner. The country's mountain of debt was recently more than 23 billion euros.
