Saxony-Anhalt: Terraced house in Merseburg uninhabitable after basement fire

Merseburg (dpa/sa) - In a basement fire in a terraced house in Merseburg, two residents inhaled so much smoke that they had to be taken to the hospital. A firefighter suffered minor burns during the extinguishing work on Friday afternoon, said a spokesman for the district control center. It is believed that the fire started from a heater that was said to have been operated in the basement. The house, in which two adults and two children live, was initially uninhabitable. According to the district control center, they are looking for accommodation.

There was also heavy smoke pollution in a neighboring house. Among other things, five local fire brigades were in action, it said. Nothing was known at the time about the amount of property damage.
