Saxony: Christmas market at Königstein Fortress brings nostalgia

Königstein (dpa/sn) - Stands made of wooden slats and lengths of fabric, dealers in traditional robes, goulash and punch in copper cauldrons and real animals in the manger: after two years of a compulsory Corona break in Advent, Königstein Fortress (Saxon Switzerland) is transformed into one again historic-romantic Christmas market. It takes you back to the past, when a lot was still handmade, even dance and fairy tales are traditional and up to the rocky plateau it goes through a cathedral made of around 70 Moravian stars.

The spectacle will be opened on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) with Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) cutting into the fortress tunnel. It is sold for the benefit of the Königstein fire brigade, which fought the forest fires in the region in the summer, for their youth work. "It's a Christmas market the likes of which can only be found on nostalgic postcards," said André Thieme, Managing Director of the Fortress. Organ music, old handicrafts, puppeteers or a printing workshop for children are part of the program - and in the Friedrichsburg, the baroque pleasure palace of Saxony's Elector August the Strong (1670-1733), the table is set with Meissen porcelain.
