Saxony: demo ban on A4: but environmentalists want to protest

Dresden (dpa/sn) - After the ban on a bicycle parade on the A4 near Dresden, critics of the motorway expansion still want to protest on Sunday. The bicycle parade should now be organized on the alternative route specified by the city away from the autobahn, said the spokesman for the Dresden Transport Alliance, Luca Gowitz, on Saturday. The organizers expect around 150 participants. 400 participants were originally registered for the demo on the A4.

The higher administrative court in Bautzen had banned the bicycle parade on Autobahn 4 between Hellerau and Klotzsche on Friday. The determination of the alternative route through the city was lawful, the basic right of freedom of assembly was not violated, the court had announced.

The Bündnis Verkehrswende Dresden did not agree with the decision, said Gowitz. However, there is no possibility for further appeal. The A4 is to be expanded to six to eight lanes in several sections around Dresden.
