Saxony: Energy protests in Saxony employ the police

Leipzig/Bautzen (dpa/sn) - The police in numerous Saxon municipalities are busy with the partly unannounced protests against rising energy prices, inflation and current political decisions. Demonstrators gathered in many places on Monday. The number of participants ranged from 100 people in Hoyerswerda to 2500 in Bautzen, as the police announced on Tuesday.

The hoped-for participation was not achieved in Leipzig. According to the police, instead of the announced 3000 participants, 1300 people came to the elevator under the motto "Leipzig gets up". Flags of the right-wing extremist Freies Sachsen were waved there, and an AfD banner could also be seen. There was a counter-protest. Firecrackers were fired. Eyewitnesses reported that the mood between the political camps was sometimes heated.

In East Saxony, the police registered the largest turnout in Bautzen, followed by Kamenz with 850 participants and Görlitz with 760 people. In eight cases, complaints were made about violations of the Assembly Act.

The Zwickau police department is also investigating after unannounced meetings and elevators had formed in some communities. The largest participation in the region was in Zwickau with 1300 people. In Chemnitz there was a smaller counter-protest against a demonstration with 2500 people.
