Leipzig (dpa / sn) - The former Brandenburg Minister of Science Martina Münch (SPD) failed in the election to the Leipzig Social Affairs Department. The 61-year-old did not receive the required number of votes in two ballots on Wednesday in the city council. Afterwards, representatives of the SPD and the left accused the Greens in the city council of voting no, like the AfD, and thus preventing Münch.
Leipzig's Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) expressed his disappointment after the failed election: "Dr. Martina Münch was convincing in the application process, her competence for this office was undisputed by most of the parliamentary groups." Now, however, power games and personal wrangling have been placed above professional suitability. "But it's even worse: the AfD has apparently found support for its destructive policies," said Jung.
The choice was secret. Now a new candidate has to be found. Meanwhile, Clemens Schülke, the Deputy for Economic Affairs, was elected. In addition, the previous head of administration, Ulrich Hörning, was re-elected.
