Saxony: Federal Office supports project in Upper Lusatia

Görlitz (dpa/sn) - The species-rich Oberlausitzer Heide and pond landscape can rely on support from the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. In the "mosaic part" program, the ecological condition of the moors, sandy heaths, ponds and pine forests should be examined and improved, the Natural Research Society of Upper Lusatia announced on Friday. The program will run for an initial period of four years, with funding amounting to a good 4.6 million euros. Five new positions have already been filled in connection with the program and one more has been advertised.

According to the Natural Research Society, the Upper Lusatia heath and pond landscape is considered a biodiversity hotspot. Species-rich habitats would be spread over an area of more than 2,000 square kilometers like a small-scale mosaic. "In and on the intermediate moors, sandy heaths, pine forests and ponds, characteristic plant, lichen and animal species can be discovered in a unique variety and frequency," it said. Partner in the project is the Senckenberg Museum for Natural History Görlitz. The Neschwitz nature conservation station is also involved.
