Berlin (dpa/sn) - Compared to the previous year, fewer cars were stolen in Saxony in 2021. Although the total number of thefts fell to a total of 538, the value of the stolen vehicles increased on average, according to the theft report by the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV), which was published in Berlin on Monday. According to this, the risk of car theft was highest in Leipzig, while people in the Chemnitz region had the least worries about their car.

According to the report, the total economic damage for the stolen comprehensively insured vehicles in Bavaria for 2021 is almost 9.3 million euros. On average, damage of 17,213 euros was incurred per theft. According to the GDV, this is almost seven percent more than in the previous year. With 21,557 euros in property damage per car theft, above-average expensive cars were stolen in Dresden. In Leipzig, on the other hand, the average amount of damage was only 13,087 euros.

In a national comparison, Saxony was slightly above the national average of 0.2 with a theft rate of 0.3 per 1000 cars. Berlin had the highest rate nationwide last year with a total of 2,200 stolen vehicles. On the other hand, the lowest rates were in the south of the country: In Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the rates were 0.1 thefts per 1000 cars, as in previous years.
