Leipzig (dpa/sn) - The Leipzig Gewandhaus opens its season for the first time with a democracy concert. Embedded in musical impulses, the Gewandhaus will bring public figures, experts, musicians and all Leipzig residents together on September 16th to discuss political issues, as a spokesman for the house announced on Thursday. The motto of the first event is "listening to one another", the opening speech will be given by Leipzig's Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD).
Gewandhaus Director Andreas Schulz emphasized that the musically inspired examination of basic values, understanding of democracy and social coexistence should not focus on polarizing party-political positions. "But the multi-faceted development and differentiated communication of basic values that are intended to support and promote our social togetherness.
On the following day (September 17) there will be a "Democracy Day" in cooperation with the Saxon State Center for Civic Education. This begins with the traditional Gewandhaus Day in the city center, where ensembles of the orchestra play music at various locations in Leipzig city center with free admission. Afterwards, interested parties are invited to the Gewandhaus to actively participate in discussions on this year's topic "listening to one another".
