Saxony: housing benefit amendment: municipalities are demanding financial support

Dresden (dpa/sn) - With a view to a housing benefit amendment that will come into force at the beginning of 2023, the city and municipal council as well as the Saxon district association have requested financial support. The amendment is an important and correct relief for the citizens, but the municipalities have to pay it almost alone, criticized the president of the association, the district administrator of the district of Leipzig, Henry Graichen, on Friday. "We expect the Treasury Secretary to address this issue," he said.

As a result of the new legislation, the number of housing benefit recipients and the expenditures of the municipalities have tripled. If they did not receive sufficient financial support from the Free State, there would be gaps of up to 120 million euros a year. In addition, there would be increased personnel costs due to the additional expenditure. These amounted to an additional 30 million euros per year.
