Saxony: Left want more intercultural competence in the police

Dresden (dpa / sn) - The left have accused the Saxon state government of not paying enough attention to intercultural skills in the police force. Compared to other federal states, the Free State does not take any specific measures to attract people with a migration background to the police profession, the parliamentary group announced on Sunday in Dresden.

In a request from left-wing politician Juliane Nagel, Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) even confirmed that there were no targeted advertising measures for people with a migration background and that these were not planned in the future either. "It is completely incomprehensible that the Ministry of the Interior continues to refuse any measure that could increase the proportion of people with a migration background and thus also intercultural skills in the Saxon police force," criticized Nagel.

While in other federal states such as Berlin the proportion of people with a migration background in the police force is just as high as in the general population, there is neither data nor targeted advertising in Saxony. "That has to change," demands Nagel. Immigrant police officers could use their intercultural knowledge and language skills to de-escalate.
